Child themes and php files

I'm pretty new to web design, just know some basic stuff. I just got MP and am trying to be smart about it and set up a child theme. I understand how style.css inherits from the parent but can override. My question is with the php files. To use them in a child theme you have to copy the entire parent file, then tweak for the desired changes. Doesn't this defeat the purpose- What if an update changes something in that parent php file?

Sorry to ask, but I've googled my heart out and searched many forums, but can't find this particular answer.

I do like the MP theme btw. :-)

One more thing- I did read your article "Creating a Child Theme in WordPress". Nice article.

That is exactly how you are suppose to do it. It is a way to create something that won't be overwritten when you update, though you may have to still maintain and update your child theme manually.

    Ok, thank you :-)
